SES - Supplemental Educational Services
What is Supplemental Educational Services (SES)?

SES services are provided outside the regular school day—before or after school, or on weekends. Once a state has identified a school as “in need of improvement” for two or more years, the school district determines which students in that school are eligible for services.
Then, the district notifies families of eligible students about their option of free tutoring. The school district must also provide information about the local SES “providers” (AKA tutoring companies) that can to help families select one and should allow families enough time to compare options and make the choice that is most suitable for their student.
What are the results? Does it actually work?
The goal of Reading And Beyond’s SES program is for each child, who completes the program, to improve by at least one grade level in reading and comprehension. During the 2008-2009 school year, 80% of the students who completed the program improved by at least one grade level in reading and comprehension.
Reading And Beyond meets the educational needs of each student by holding tutoring sessions twice a week, for one hour. Each child receives 20-25 one hour sessions. The exact number of sessions depends on the school district the student attends. Our main priority is the educational success of each child.
Who is eligible for SES?

Students of low-income families, generally those who receive free or reduced-price lunch, who attend Title 1 schools that have not made adequate yearly progress for at least three years, are eligible for free tutoring services. School districts are required to notify families if their children are eligible for SES tutoring services.
Families can also find out whether a child is eligible by contacting the school principal, school district, or the U.S. Department of Education (toll-free at 1-800-872-5327).
Why choose Reading and Beyond as your child’s SES provider?
Reading And Beyond is a non-profit organization with a 10-year history and reputation for effective literacy tutoring. Our tutoring program was recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, Fresno Unified School District, the James Irvine Foundation, and multiple other sources.
Reading And Beyond offers students educational assistance with an emphasis on reading and comprehension. Our program enables the student to attain his or her specific achievement goals by providing one-on-one tutoring.
Parents have the choice of taking their child to one of our “community sites” to receive tutoring, or having the tutor work with their child in the comfort of their home. As part of the SES provider responsibilities, Reading And Beyond will measure the student’s progress, and regularly inform the student’s parents and teachers of that progress.
Who will be tutoring your child?
Reading And Beyond’s SES tutors are a combination of credentialed teachers, liberal study majors in their junior or senior year of college, and professionals with a proven history of effective tutoring and at least 48 units of completed college. All tutors complete a through literacy intervention training given by a credentialed teacher.
