College Preparation

Reading And Beyond’s College Preparation is based upon research that showcases the importance of a college education, especially in relation to earning potential. On average, a person with a college degree can earn significantly more than a person with a high school diploma.

In 2007, Reading And Beyond received a four-year federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education to begin the Upward Bound program in partnership with Central Unified School District to assist 60 high school students in preparing for college study.  Each of the participants were first-generation college students, i.e. they were the first in their family to progress to college.

In the program, students participate in an array of activities including tutoring, academic, financial and personal counseling, mentoring, cultural enrichment and a six-week summer component. The summer component provides academic instruction in math, composition, literature and foreign language.

In November 2008, Reading And Beyond launched a unique college preparation program designed to encourage and support parents who wish to improve their economic self- sufficiency through a college education.
