Reading and Beyond

Literacy Intervention/ After School Program: Reading and Beyond’s first program was the reading tutoring program for low-income children who are struggling in school. In 1999 this program began with 30 students and in 2007 reached an enrollment number of over 700 students daily. It’s common for children to enroll in the program who are 1-5 grade levels behind. This program, like all our other programs is “research-based” and developed using best practices in the field. The goal of the tutoring program is for a child who is enrolled in the program for 6 months or longer, to improve by at least 1 grade level in reading and comprehension. To monitor their progress, each child's reading level is assessed every ten weeks.

Adults of all ages and backgrounds come to one of our sites to tutor children. The goal is to give children the individual and small group help they need to improve and be able to read at grade level. Volunteers can work with a child 1-4 times per week, for 1-2 hours (based on the volunteer’s availability). This program operates five days per week, for three hours per day.

Reading and Beyond’s tutoring sites are located at: St. James Anglican Cathedral, First Covenant Church, Hope Lutheran Church, El Encino Baptist Church, Balderas Elementary, Heaton Elementary, Storey Elementary, Wishon Elementary, Westpark Elementary and Laton/Conejo Elementary.
